The Comfort of Repetition: Cooking the Same Five Meals

TThe Test KitchenAugust 4, 2026 · 4 min read

Somewhere along the way, having a large repertoire became the mark of a serious home cook. I'd like to make the case for the opposite.

Most weeks, I make some version of the same five meals — not out of a lack of imagination, but because I've cooked them enough times to do it without thinking, which frees up the part of my evening that actually needs the attention.

Novelty is a nice guest. It's a bad tenant.

A rotation isn't a rut if you chose it. It's just a smaller, more honest map of what you actually like to eat.
